Nokia Asha Smart Phone

nokia-asha-305
Nokia’s Mobile Phones division has long been a key contributor to the company’s business. The Nokia Asha range has proven especially popular, with the most advanced phones in the range now accepted as smartphones by some analysts.
We talked to Jussi Nevanlinna, VP product marketing, to find out more.
So what is a smartphone and how do some Nokia Asha phones fall into that category?
JussiWell, I think it’s more about what customers define as a smartphone than any definition laid down by us. There seems to be three things that people expect. The first is a touch screen. Then, inside, they expect web browsing and the integration of certain apps and services into the operating system, especially in the areas of social and location. And third, that they have the ability to get more apps.
Of course, we have touch screens on all the Nokia Asha Touch products, from the Nokia Asha 305 to the Asha 311.
With integrated services, the Nokia Xpress browser is key here, compressing pages by 90 per cent compared to other mobile browsers. And the cost implications of less data downloaded are really important to people who are perhaps new to smartphones and being connected to the Internet from their mobile. Then of course, we have Nokia Maps on all Asha Touch smartphones. These are the same great HERE Maps that we have on our Nokia Lumia family of smartphones, and you can preload them onto your phone – so there’s no need to wait for them to download when you’re on the move.
When it comes to more apps, people set a lot of importance on what games are available, and how many. Our deal with EA which lets owners download up to 40 leading titles for free is of enormous importance here. And that gives them the confidence and experience to download and buy more. Nokia Asha has become a very large apps platform with the Nokia Store on board.

So will all phones be smartphones in a few years?
The demand for smartphones is massive and it’s the affordable end of that market that is growing fastest. Over time, they will increasingly be the products people want.
However, people are different. There’s a whole set of users who are actually looking for a phone that does just a few key things very well. They want a curated experience.
Then, of course, there are a large number of countries where people are still entering the mobile phone market for the first time. They want the best they can afford, but that may well not be a smartphone for their first purchase.
700-nokia-asha-306-red-twitter_sm
So how does the cost of manufacturing a phone break down? Which parts contribute most to the expense?
Well, as always, ‘it depends’. The costs in creating a touch-screen phone are very different to those involved in creating a feature phone.
The biggest cost is definitely the screen, and there’s a clear relationship between screen size and the overall cost of a phone.
Then it’s often the memory and storage space that’s the next highest cost.
Following that, it’s the speed of the processor. And then it’s often the choice of construction materials for the case that’s a key consideration.
700-nokia-asha-309_08_sm
Do these components get more powerful and costs reduce every year, as we’re used to with PCs? i.e. Moore’s law.
Generally speaking, that’s the case, yes. Though not everything evolves at the same speed, so sometimes there are pauses and then big steps in the evolution of the specifications.
Sometimes particular components in the Asha range are actually ahead of the curve. Take battery life, for example. People who use a smartphone have been taught not to expect a particularly great battery life – a day or two, perhaps. So a phone like the Nokia Asha 309 comes as a real revelation to them. This phone has a standby time of 42 days. You could leave it on the kitchen table, go off sailing round the world for a month, come back and still have several days’ work left in it.
This is, of course, the result of years of research and investment into battery technology and making the most out of a limited resource. It’s not because battery capacity technology manages to double every year. But “trust and quality” is one of the keystones of how we’ve shaped the Asha brand, and great battery life is a proof point of us delivering on that.
nokia-asha-306
And lastly, how is the Series 40 operating system holding up into the 21st Century?
Pretty well, we think. Again, we have to base this on what our customers tell us. The OS has an extremely high Net Promoter score – that’s a measure of how likely people are to recommend something to other people. They describe the user experience as “rich” and say that it “performs quickly”.
And, of course, while Series 40 was first conceived quite some time ago, it’s in a continual process of evolution. When we moved to touch, that demanded a whole host of technical improvements and redesigns for the interface and user experience.
Asha Touch devices are actually the leading smartphones in a number of markets. In China and Indonesia, the Nokia Asha 305 is the top-selling smartphone in its price band. In India and Pakistan, in fact, across the IMEA (India, Middle-East and Asia) region, it’s the top-selling smartphone overall.
One reason for this is the way we go about creating them. We don’t just take an expensive design and then shrink it down or chop things off until it hits the price point. Some of our competitors do this, and it can lead to phones that feel ‘cheap’. Our phones are built from the ground-up to deliver a particular set of user experiences. They are purpose-built, not cut-down.

Monet Contracts with Fundamo to Offer Shared Mobile Money Solutions in Pakistan

Monet Monet Contracts with Fundamo to Offer Shared Mobile Money Solutions in Pakistan

A shared mobile money network, built on Visa’s Fundamo technology, that can be tapped by banks and telcos is preparing to launch in Pakistan, said a statement issued yesterday.
Monet –  a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Group – has secured approval from the State Bank of Pakistan to build its network, which is being offered to local firms planning to launch mobile money services.
Built on Fundamo technology, Monet says its offering will provide a managed service platform, agent management services and bill aggregation services to new financial institutions and network operators interested in entering branchless banking services.
The first clients are Pakistan’s sixth largest financial institution, Bank Alfalah, and Warid Telecom, who have teamed up to launch a new brand on the platform.
Monet says that its network will make it cheaper, easier and quicker for firms to tap into Pakistan’s huge unbanked market.
According to the Pakistan Access to Finance Survey, only 12% of the population has access to formal financial services, yet mobile penetration stands at nearly 70%, says the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority.
A recent study by the Boston Consulting Group estimates that 35% of the country’s adult population will be using mobile financial services by 2020.
Ali Abbas Sikander, CEO, Monet, says: “We are building an open and collaborative eco-system which benefits all the stakeholders of the financial services ecosystem in Pakistan. Collaborative mobile financial services, as opposed to bank-led or telco-led deployment, is the paradigm shift which will assist in creating a bigger and less costly enabling environment for the issuers, acquirers and service providers.”
Aletha Ling, COO, Fundamo, adds: “The platform allows service providers to think big, start small and scale fast. The result will be an ecosystem that that will support the long term and sustained growth of the Pakistani mobile financial services market.”

SpeedCast Partners with Supernet and Comtech to Deliver Cellular Backhaul Services in Pakistan

image SpeedCast Partners with Supernet and Comtech to Deliver Cellular Backhaul Services in Pakistan
SpeedCast, Asia’s leading satellite telecommunications service provider, together with partner Supernet, today announced the award of two multi-year contracts to provide their CelCast™ cellular backhaul service for more than 30 sites in Pakistan. SpeedCast and Supernet selected Comtech EF Data, the global leader in satellite bandwidth efficiency and link optimization, and leveraged their market-leading modems to deliver a highly optimized and efficient cellular backhaul solution for their customers.
SpeedCast and Supernet partnered to deliver a high quality GSM backhaul network in Pakistan, which is now utilized by two of the leading GSM service providers to extend their reach in the mountainous northern areas and far flung remote areas in the south of Pakistan.
Cellular backhaul projects are substantially more complex than basic IP networks, because of the real-time nature of the voice and data traffic. Network implementation was particularly challenging for 20 of the sites, because it involved stringent implementation time-lines and the requirement of minimum outage during the change over from the incumbent service providers to the Supernet and SpeedCast network. Moreover, the operators have strict service level agreements for performance, to guarantee a high level of quality for their users.
“Cellular operators are increasingly outsourcing their satellite-based cellular backhaul requirements today. We are pleased to have partnered with Supernet to deliver our cellular backhaul service in Pakistan,” stated Pierre-Jean Beylier, CEO of SpeedCast. “Supernet is an experienced partner with a strong local presence, who understands the requirements of such demanding networks.”
"These projects are a welcome addition to our rich portfolio of GSM backhaul over satellite service in Pakistan. We are pleased to be working with SpeedCast and Comtech EF Data to deliver bandwidth efficiencies and cost-effective expansion options for our existing and new customers. These recent contracts are a testament to the quality and reliability of our service,” stated Hamid Nawaz, COO of Supernet. “It is rewarding to partner with a leader in Asia to deliver a compelling solution for customers in Pakistan and surrounding regions.”
SpeedCast’s CelCast™ product is a cellular traffic backhaul solution that enables mobile operators to expand their 2G or 3G coverage in a rapid and cost-effective manner. This managed service allows cellular operators to deliver service to remote and hard-to-reach areas, while minimizing their capital expenditure and avoiding significant increases in their operating expenditures. SpeedCast’s CelCast™ is deployed and in service in multiple countries throughout Asia and the Middle East.
Comtech EF Data’s CDM-625 Advanced Satellite Modem combines advanced forward error correction with DoubleTalk® Carrier-in-Carrier® bandwidth compression for maximum savings under all conditions. DoubleTalk® Carrier-in-Carrier®, based on Raytheon Applied Signal Technology’s patented "Adaptive Cancellation" technology, allows transmit and receive carriers of a duplex link to share the same transponder space. The combination of advanced technologies enables users to minimize OPEX/CAPEX and maximize throughput/availability without using additional transponder resources. The CX-U Series brings together access device and cellular backhaul traffic optimization, offering a variety of interfaces and transmission options.

Samsung Galaxy S IV Gets Unveiled

Samsung Galaxy S IV Samsung Galaxy S IV Gets Unveiled
The next big thing from Samsung is finally here as the Samsung Galaxy S IV has been announced in New York this morning. The phone is unarguably one of the very best in the smartphone industry ever with its ground-breaking specs.
Featuring a 4.99 Inch Full HD display, 13mp camera and an 8-core processor, this phone has enough power to thrash any phone in the market right now.
Here are the specs followed by details below:
  • OS: Android OS, v4.2.2 (Jelly Bean)
  • CPU: Quad-core 1.6 GHz Cortex-A15 & quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7
  • Chipset: Exynos 5 Octa 5410

    • Secondary Camera: 2 MP
    • Battery: Li-Ion 2600 mAh battery

    Design

The design of the phone is similar to take of the Note II and the Galaxy S III. Its again made of polycarbonate plastic which some people don’t like a lot but it has its own advantages. It keeps the weight low and adds durability to the phone which isn’t that bad. A thin layer of metal surrounds the phone. It still is hardly a premium material though.
The whole body of the phone weighs just 130g and is razor thin at an astonishing 7.9mm. Height and width dimensions are 136.6 and 69.8 mm respectively.

    Display

The display is one of the strongest points of the Galaxy S IV. It sports a 4.99 Inch screen and has a mind-blowing Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. That sums up to 441ppi which is a huge achievement indeed. Its also an AMOLED unit so the colors are extremely vibrant and viewing angles are great. It is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3.
Its actually a Pentile Matrix display but that won’t hurt the display much especially of this resolution. But you simply can’t deny that this is the new benchmark of the entire phone industry and all of the phone companies should develop their next flagships by keeping this display in mind.

    Operating System

Just like other recent Samsung flagship phones, the Galaxy S IV also runs on the latest piece of software. It runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean which is the latest Android software to have come out of Google.
Its covered on top with Samsung’s Touchwiz UI which some people don’t like when compared to Vanilla Android but still it several unique and new features to the mix so that’s not necessarily a disadvantage.
Just like the previous year, the Galaxy S IV this year comes with really cool software tricks too. There’s S-Voice which in short is the Siri of Android. Smart Pause stops the video playback when you look away from the screen. Smart Scroll scrolls webpages downwards when you tilt the device and look at it at the same time. There’s S-Health and S-Translator too. Air gestures is another amazing trick which let you do stuff simply by waving in front of the screen. Finally there’s hover-touch which lets you do stuff just by hovering your finger above the display. Video/Audio codec support is pretty rich too.

    Hardware

There lives a beast inside every Galaxy S IV. It has got two 4-core processors. The first one is a 1.6Ghz quad-core Cortex A15 processor. The second is a less capable 4-core 1.2Ghz quad-core Cortex A7. No need to get worried though as you won’t be frying eggs on it anyway. The chipset used is Exynos 5 Octa and the GPU is PowerVR SGX 544MP3.
The amount of RAM is set at 2GB. It will be available in 3 storage options: 16, 32 and 64 GB. You can expand that even further by 64 more GBs via a microSD card slot.
In short, the Galaxy S IV has got more power than a lot of PCs on earth. Enough said.

    Cameras

Samsung’s obsession with 8mp camera units in flagships has finally come to an end. The Galaxy S IV features a 13mp camera with Full HD video recording, along with a 2.1mp front Full HD camera.
That’s not all though. The camera is full of additional features. There’s HDR mode. There’s a mode which takes video from the front and back camera simultaneously. A Drama Shot mode takes 9 photos and merges them into a single image. One mode even lets you throw an object out of the image you’ve taken.
There’s also a CInema Photo which lets you create GIF images by shooting a video and deciding which part should look moving and which stopped.

    Connectivity

The phone shines in the connectivity department too. It features Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, card slot, microUSB 2.0, USB-on-the-go, GPS, dual-band Wifi and Wifi-Hotspot. There’s also IR Blaster which can turn this phone into you most expensive remote control. GPRS and EDGE are there too (for Pakistani telecom companies, just kidding).
It supports micro-sim card slots and connections up to 4G LTE are supported.

    Others

A lot of other great features are part of the pack too. First of all, there’s a huge 2600mAh battery which will guarantee long battery life. It will be available in White Frost and Black Mist colors. A lot of social networking services are available. The usual list of sensors including Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Barometer and others are built right into the phone.

    Pricing and Availability

The phone will be available in April this year. Pricing details are unknown but considering the fact that the Galaxy S III was the first phone which was more expensive than the iPhone when it first came out, you shouldn’t be placing too many bets on the Galaxy S IV’s lower price tag either.
But whether you like it or hate it, you simply can’t ignore this phone. Featuring great features, a lot of cool tricks, top-of-the-class display and a similarly capable camera, the Galaxy S IV is one of the best smartphones ever.
If you don’t care about the cons, i.e. the big size and the build materials much, I don’t think anything other than the Galaxy S IV can suit you better. All hail the new king ofthe Android kingdom.

Andy Rubin Calls it a Day as Android Chief

Andy Rubin Andy Rubin Calls it a Day as Android Chief
Andy Rubin, the guy in charge of Google’s Android operating system will finally step down from his post after a long, fruitful period of 8 years. He will be replaced by Sundar Pichai who has already worked on the Chrome browser and Chrome OS among several other things.
Rubin is the person behind the enormous success of the biggest smartphone operating system on the planet and has worked with a number of tech giants including Apple and Carl Zeiss.
The announcement was made by Google CEO Larry Page in the official Google Blog. "Sergey and I first heard about Android back in 2004", Page writes, "when Andy Rubin came to visit us at Google. He believed that aligning standards around an open-source operating system would drive innovation across the mobile industry. Most people thought he was nuts. But his insight immediately struck a chord because at the time it was extremely painful developing services for mobile devices".
He isn’t going out of the picture though. "Having exceeded even the crazy ambitious goals we dreamed of for Android — and with a really strong leadership team in place — Andy’s decided it’s time to hand over the reins and start a new chapter at Google. Andy, more moonshots please!" Page is obviously hinting at a new position for Rubin in the future.
Android was founded by Rubin and his 2 other colleagues in 2003. It encountered a series of financial troubles until Google bought it in 2005, bringing Rubin to Google. Success came quickly without breaking records. Praises starting coming by the end of the last decade as Google started the use of new technologies in their phones and also with the launch of their own ‘Nexus’ phones. As of now, 750 million devices run Android worldwide and 25 billion apps have been downloaded from the Play Store – the Android Market Place – so far.
Moving forward Larry Page is optimistic about the new chief of the Android department. "Going forward, Sundar Pichai will lead Android, in addition to his existing work with Chrome and Apps." Page writes. "Sundar has a talent for creating products that are technically excellent yet easy to use—and he loves a big bet. Take Chrome, for example. In 2008, people asked whether the world really needed another browser. Today Chrome has hundreds of millions of happy users and is growing fast thanks to its speed, simplicity and security. So while Andy’s a really hard act to follow, I know Sundar will do a tremendous job doubling down on Android as we work to push the ecosystem forward."
One thing which has always been a characteristic of Rubin’s work is his innovation and taste. Now that he has left Android, it will be interesting to see which way he will go from now onwards and what wonders will he be able to achieve from there.

Samsung Reveals the Dual SIM Galaxy Y Plus

Samsung Galaxy Y Plus Samsung Reveals the Dual SIM Galaxy Y Plus
Samsung has just unveiled the successor to the popular Galaxy Y budget smartphone in the Galaxy Y Plus. The phone looks more like a Galaxy Pocket though and features a 2.8 inch display along with dual-sim compatibility.
Here are the full specs of the phone:
    • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
    • 2.4 inch display with resolution of 240 x 320 pixels
    • Dual-sim compatibility
    • Weight: 96g
    • 12.98mm thick
    • 850 Mhz single-core processor
    • 4GB internal storage with memory card slot
    • 2mp rear-camera
    • Wifi, GPS, Bluetooth, microUSB
    • 1200 mAh battery
The phone will retail for around $150 or about 17000 in Pakistani rupees. For that money nowadays you can easily buy a much more powerful smartphone, even with dual-sim compatibility. The biggest blow however is from Samsung itself. The phone has a smaller display compared to its predecessor and with a processor this weak, respectable performance cannot be expected.
It depends on the users though, what they select for themselves.
